Telephone SCAM-FRAUD Warning from West Mercia Police

Alert message sent 10/04/2018 17:32:00

Information sent on behalf of Neighbourhood Watch

Dear NHW Member,

This is a SCAM / FRAUD Warning from our friends at West Mercia Police.
West Mercia Police are appealing to the residents of Herefordshire of SCAM phone calls which are being received across Herefordshire today.

It is one that has previously affected some elderly residents of Herefordshire where they have lost a considerable amount of money to these criminals whereby a supposed ‘Police Officer’ rings you to tell you that he thinks your bank account has been compromised and that you need to take action to prevent any further monies being stolen. He then gains the trust of the person over several hours by several more calls, giving his again, supposed 'Collar Number' and the Police Station he works at (very often this is stated to be in London and the criminal makes out to be he is from the Met Police).  This is ALL absolutely made-up rubbish (as NO Police Officer ANYWHERE in the UK will contact a member of the public like this). Ultimately all the Criminal wants is for you to give him your your bank details and your money... OR, try and get YOU to move your Money to another account that THEY control.... OR, they say they will send a Courier around to you to pick the money up from you and that this Courier will have a 'PASSWORD' to give to you so that you know who it is.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, make sure ALL your Family, Friends and ESPECIALLY your elderly and vulnerable Neighbours are aware of this and tell them to JUST HANG UP and do not use the phone for at least 10 minutes afterwards and when they do use it, to make absolutely sure that they actually check and listen for a Dial Tone before dialing any numbers... again, especially if they are then trying to report it to the Police on 101.

We cannot stress enough how important this is: One elderly resident of Herefordshire lost approx £8,000 to this SCAM earlier this year.

If you or ANYONE you know, has received a call like this recently, today, or over the next few days, once you have confirmed that your telephone line is clear (as above) please report it to West Mercia Police on 101, quoting Incident number: 0238S 100418.
